Book Review: Tokyo Ever After

The Princess Diaries retelling we all needed

This book is so cute that it put me in a summery mood! Summer is lingering in Oklahoma, so I paired it with a Slate and Willow dress from Rent the Runway to match the book. I’m loving having endless wardrobe options this summer and can’t wait to rent cute fall clothes!

This is the Princess Diaries retelling we all needed. Izumi’s entire world is shaken when a book inscription leads her and her sleuthing friends to the fact that her father just might be the Crown Prince of Japan. Suddenly, Izumi is whisked away to a world where everything – from her airport attire to the way she walks – is considered wrong, and where every detail, even a bathroom stop, needs to be meticulously planned by security.

Izumi is determined to navigate this new world, with the help of her very hot, very annoyed bodyguard and her equally annoyed lady-in-waiting, so she can get to know her father and find out if Japan is where she’ll finally feel like she belongs.

This book has it all – splendid palaces, forbidden romance and laugh-out-loud humor. The supporting characters are delightful, with her friends’ irreverent texts providing the perfect foil to all the Japanese customs Izumi must learn. After all, what are best friends for if not to call your newfound dad the Asian George Clooney?

Izumi wears her heart on her sleeve as she finds her way in her new world, even if all her decisions aren’t always what’s always been done. As annoyance turns to attraction between Izumi and the hot bodyguard, the reader will be delighted to learn he has a taste for writing poetry. But when things fall apart with both the bodyguard and her dad, Izumi will have to decide what’s best for her broken heart.
